TANK TESTINGIn 2000 OOS won a DTI Smart Technology and Innovation Award to study “The Feasibility of Wave piercing and Dynamic lift technology in monohull sailboats”. The tank testing of the design was completed at the internationally reknowned Wolfson Unit in Southampton by Andrew Claughton (Head of Design at Team New Zealand). 1:4 scale tank test models were used, focusing primarily on the yaw and lift forces developed due to wing immersion. We tested four different wing shapes which when combined with a variety of wing positions and angles provided a comprehensive test matrix. Testing was a carried out to 17knts and included wave drag tests to analyse performance in a seaway. VPP analysis was undertaken to study the hull in combination with the rig, top speed is predicted at over 30knts. This extensive study produced a highly refined hull form which behaves impeccably.
